Historical pub in Birmingham

The "Old Joint Stock Pub & Theatre" in Birmingham is a unique venue that combines traditional British pub culture with a touch of history and a professional theatre experience. Located in the heart of the city within a magnificent Grade II listed building, it has become a popular meeting spot for locals and visitors alike. Originally built in 1862 as a library and later used by the Birmingham Joint Stock Bank, the building was taken over by Lloyds Bank before being converted into a pub in 1997. Since 2006, it has also housed a studio theatre, lovingly designed by Fuller’s, the current owners, with great attention to detail. It is a place that breathes history while offering a modern, vibrant atmosphere.

Theater performances at Old Joint Stock

The interior of the "Old Joint Stock" is a visual delight: an impressive glass dome crowns the ceiling, while intricate mosaic floors, carved woodwork, and large mirrors reflect the Victorian splendor of the building. The centerpiece is the island bar, overlooked by a balcony that not only provides a fantastic view of the action but can also be used as a private event space. The second-floor theatre is an intimate space with around 80 seats, equipped with flexible seating and modern technology. Regular performances take place here, ranging from new plays to musicals and comedy shows, giving the pub a cultural dimension. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a blend of historic charm and contemporary comfort, encouraging both relaxation and celebration.

Pub with traditional British cuisine

Culinary offerings at the "Old Joint Stock" feature elevated pub classics prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients. A highlight is the "Venison, Port & Prune Pie," a hearty game pie with a rich, fruity note, served in a crispy shell that pairs perfectly with an ale. Also popular is the "Sunday Roast," a traditional Sunday dish featuring succulent meat – choice of beef, pork, or lamb – accompanied by fluffy Yorkshire puddings, crispy roast potatoes, and plenty of gravy. For a sweet finish, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding," enriched with Fuller’s Vintage Ale and served with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream, celebrates British cuisine in a delicious way.

Upscale restaurant with theater

The drinks menu is equally impressive, featuring a wide selection of Fuller’s beers, including the famous "London Pride," which flows here in abundance and is considered one of the best-selling beers in the UK. Additionally, there are modern craft beers, classic ales, and an extensive gin collection to delight enthusiasts. The restaurant also offers a breakfast selection, ranging from a full English breakfast with bacon and eggs to lighter options like smoked salmon with scrambled eggs – ideal for a relaxed start to the day.

Magnificent old pub with lots of lovely beer and good pub grub. The setting makes it though and places it ahead of many other fine pubs in Brum

Beautiful architecture, great food and drink. I had the fish and chips with curry sauce, what a treat. Nice view of the Cathedral from our window table.

The Old Stock Theatre offers a charming escape with its beautiful interior and tranquil atmosphere. I had the chicken pie, which was tasty, though the crust was a little hard and the mash portion could've been bigger. My friend really enjoyed her fish finger sandwich. Overall, it's a lovely spot, and with a few tweaks to the food, it could be even better!

A relatively fancy pub, attracting a mix of sit-in diners and groups standing around the bar. Lively atmosphere & charming interior. Busy on a Satuday afternoon, so would recommend reserving a table in advance if you want a meal. The steak and ale pie was alright but not worth the £19 price - have had a lot of better pies elsewhere. My friend really enjoyed their fish and chips though.

This place is good to visit in the day or early evening after which it gets extremely busy. As with most Fullers pubs the beer is to a high standard but you may have to wait to be served. The service is friendly and the venue is well heated.
